Privacy policy

Last updated 13 October 2026

MotorTrader is a marketplace for buying cars in Nigeria. This page explains what we collect about you, why we collect it, who we share it with and what you can ask us to do with it. We keep it short and specific: if something is not listed here, we do not collect it.

Who we are

MotorTrader operates the website at motortrader.store and its dealer and admin apps. We are the data controller for the personal data described below. You can reach us about anything on this page at admin@motortrader.store or on WhatsApp.

What we collect

If you browse without an account: nothing that identifies you. We count visits anonymously. If you accept analytics cookies, we also record which pages and searches you use, linked to a random identifier rather than your name (see Cookies).

If you create a buyer account: your email address and a password. We store the password only in a scrambled form we cannot read back.

When you contact a seller: your phone number, and a record of which car you asked about and when. We ask for the number the first time you contact a seller and keep it on your account for next time.

If you are a dealer: your business name, address, phone and WhatsApp numbers, CAC registration number if you give it, the cars you list and their photos, and your subscription and payment status. Card details are entered on our payment provider’s page and never reach us.

Emails we send you: whether they were delivered, so we can stop sending to an address that bounces or reports us as spam.

Why we use it

  • To provide the service you asked for (contract): your account, putting you in touch with a seller, a dealer’s listings and plan.
  • To keep the marketplace safe (legitimate interest): checking dealers before they can list, limiting repeated sign-in attempts, investigating reports of scams.
  • To improve the site (consent): analytics, only if you accept cookies.
  • To meet legal duties (legal obligation): for example, keeping payment records.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.

Who we share it with

  • The seller you contact. When you press “Contact seller”, the dealer receives your phone number so they can reply, and the conversation continues on WhatsApp, under WhatsApp’s own privacy terms.
  • Buyers, for dealers. A dealer’s business name, area and the cars they list are public. Their WhatsApp number is given to a buyer who asks to contact them.
  • Service providers who run parts of MotorTrader for us, under contract and only for that purpose: Railway (hosting and storage), Resend (email delivery), Bachs (dealer subscription payments), PostHog in the EU (analytics, with your consent) and Sanity (our blog, which holds no buyer data).
  • Authorities, when the law requires it.

Some of these providers process data outside Nigeria. Where they do, we rely on their contractual commitments to protect it to the standard the Nigeria Data Protection Act requires.

How long we keep it

  • Account details: for as long as your account is open.
  • Contact requests and dealer records: for up to two years after your last activity, so we can deal with disputes and scam reports.
  • Payment records: for as long as tax law requires.
  • Analytics: up to 12 months.

When you delete your account, we remove your email and phone number from it straight away. Records we must keep by law are kept in a form that no longer names you where we can.

Your rights

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act you can ask us to:

  • tell you what we hold about you and give you a copy;
  • correct anything that is wrong;
  • delete your data;
  • stop or limit how we use it, or object to a use;
  • give your data to you, or to another service, in a common format;
  • withdraw consent you gave, such as for analytics, at any time.

You can delete your buyer account yourself from your account. For anything else, message us at admin@motortrader.store. We reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (ndpc.gov.ng).

Cookies

Necessary cookies keep you signed in. They are set only when you sign in, and the site cannot work without them.

Analytics cookies are set only if you press “Accept” on our cookie question. They let us see how the site is used, for example which searches find nothing. Without them we still count visits, anonymously and without cookies. You can change your answer at any time from “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.

Security

Connections to MotorTrader are encrypted, passwords are stored scrambled, access to personal data inside our team is limited to the people who need it, and repeated sign-in attempts are blocked. If a breach ever puts your data at risk, we will tell you and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission as the law requires.

Children

MotorTrader is for adults. You must be 18 or over to create an account.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy we update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use data you have already given us, we will tell you by email before it takes effect.
